Arriving in Mykonos by Ferry 2027: New Port, Old Port and Transfers

Many visitors reach Mykonos by ferry from Athens or from other Cyclades islands like Paros, Naxos, Tinos or Santorini. The crossing is part of the adventure, but arriving at a busy port with luggage can be confusing. Here is what you need to know.

New Port or Old Port?

Mykonos has two ports. The New Port, at Tourlos, is about 2 to 3 km north of Mykonos Town, and it is where most ferries and cruise ships arrive. The Old Port is right next to the town centre and is used by some smaller boats, including excursion boats to Delos. Always check your ticket for the port, because they are not walking distance from each other with luggage.

What happens when you arrive

When a large ferry docks, hundreds of passengers leave at once. Taxis at the port are limited, and queues form quickly. There is a sea bus to town and some buses, but they will not take you to most hotels and villas.

Ferry delays and the meltemi

In summer, the strong north wind known as the meltemi can delay ferries or, on rough days, cancel crossings. Arrival times can change by an hour or more. That is why we track your ferry and adjust your pickup, so your driver is there when you step off the boat.

Getting from the port to your hotel or villa

From the New Port, most areas of the island are 10 to 25 minutes away, and the airport is about 15 minutes. A private transfer means your driver meets you at the port with a sign with your name, helps with your bags and drives you straight to your door.

Island hopping tips

  1. Book ferries early in July and August, especially fast boats.
  2. Keep your ticket handy; you will need it to board.
  3. Arrive at the port at least 30 to 45 minutes before departure.
  4. Plan connections carefully; ferries can run late.
  5. Book your port transfer both ways.
