Mykonos Island Tours: The Best Things to See Beyond the Beach

Most visitors know Mykonos for its beaches and nightlife, but the island has another side: whitewashed villages, ancient history, wild northern bays and some of the best sunsets in the Aegean. A private tour is the easiest way to see it all in a day, at your own pace.

Mykonos Town, Little Venice and the windmills

Start in Chora, the island's main town, where narrow white lanes hide churches, boutiques and small squares. Visit the Paraportiani church, one of the most photographed buildings in Greece, then walk to Little Venice, where houses stand right at the water's edge. Finish at the Kato Mili windmills above the town, the classic spot for sunset.

Delos: the sacred island

Just a short boat ride from Mykonos, Delos was one of the most important religious centres of ancient Greece and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its temples, mosaics and the famous Terrace of the Lions make it a must for anyone interested in history. Boats leave from Mykonos Town, and the site is usually closed on Mondays, so plan around that. Bring water, a hat and good shoes.

Ano Mera: the traditional village

In the centre of the island, Ano Mera feels far from the crowds. Visit the Monastery of Panagia Tourliani, with its carved marble bell tower, and stay for lunch in the village square, where tavernas serve local cheese, sausage and fresh fish.

The Armenistis lighthouse and the north coast

On the north-west tip of the island, the Armenistis lighthouse looks out over the sea towards Tinos. The north coast is wilder and windier than the south, with quieter beaches like Agios Sostis and Fokos, where you can still find a stretch of sand to yourself.

A tour by sea

For a different view, spend a day on a private yacht. Most trips sail the south coast, stopping at bays you cannot reach by road, with swimming, lunch on board and sometimes a visit to Delos or Rhenia.

How to plan your island tour

A private tour with a chauffeur lets you choose your stops and timings, avoid parking problems and enjoy a glass of wine at lunch. A half day covers the town, the windmills and Ano Mera; a full day adds the north coast, the lighthouse and a sunset stop.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to drive around Mykonos? The island is small, so no drive takes more than about 30 minutes, but a full tour with stops takes a whole day.

Is Delos worth it? Yes, especially in the morning, before the heat. Allow at least half a day.

Can we combine a tour with a beach? Of course. A private chauffeur can drop you at a beach club and collect you later.
